Men's Health

Too young to have erectile dysfunction? Not necessarily.

Erectile difficulties can affect teenagers and young men as well as older men. They can be worrying, but a confidential consultation can help identify possible causes and the right next step.

Erectile dysfunction is not merely a condition that affects older men. Teenagers and young men under the age of 20 can also have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, which is understandable and can cause considerable worry.

Possible causes in young men

In young men, the cause is usually linked to performance anxiety, stress, relationship problems, inadequate sleep or low mood. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, using e-cigarettes, alcohol and recreational drugs may also play a part. Less frequently, hormonal disorders, medication side-effects or an underlying medical condition may need to be considered.

When should you seek advice?

It is generally not a problem if an episode or two occurs. However, if difficulties continue, especially alongside reduced libido, loss of morning erections or other symptoms, they should be properly evaluated.

What happens at a consultation?

A confidential consultation can help identify the probable cause and determine whether an examination or blood tests are necessary. For many young men, reassurance, lifestyle changes and support with managing anxiety may be all that is required. If an underlying problem is found, suitable treatment can then be provided.

Avoid self-medicating

Avoid self-medicating or buying erectile dysfunction treatments over the internet without first seeking medical advice, especially when you are young.
